Lecture with Choy Ka Fai followed by a talk between the artist and dance scholar André Lepecki, moderated by Kirsten Maar from project B02 and Yon Natalie Mik part of the Graduiertenkolleg Normativity – Critique – Change.

In Ten Notes for Choy Ka Fai’s Prospectus for a Future Body (2011), performance scholar André Lepecki describes choreography as a “design and execution of predetermined movements.” Cross-border experiences of learning and translating history, tradition, culture and bodily knowledge are facilitated through digitality and telepresence in Choy Ka Fai´s work. A performance lecture by the artist followed by a dialogue with André Lepecki will address the relation between choreographic violence and a dancer’s agency. What kind of conditions impact the form of knowledge transmission and how can choreography negotiate the thin line between a colonizing violence and an emancipatory queering of different bodies? What is the generative potential of deviations, disturbances, and fractures that arise during the process of knowledge transmission?

André Lepecki is a writer and curator working and researching at the intersection of critical dance studies, curatorial practice, performance theory, contemporary dance and visual arts performance. He is a professor and the chair of the Department of Performance Studies at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He has published widely and edited several anthologies. He has also curated numerous festivals and exhibitions including the award-winning re-staging of Allan Kaprow’s 18 Happenings in 6 Parts. In 2010 he co-curated the Archive on Dance and Visual Arts since the 1960s for the exhibition Move: Choreographing You at the Hayward Gallery. Moreover, he curated the 2008 and 2009 editions of the InTransit Festival at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, and he was a Research Fellow at Interweaving Performance Cultures at Freie Universität Berlin. He is the author of the books Exhausting Dance (2006), Singularities: Dance in the Age of Performance (2016), Idiorítmia (2018), and the editor of Points of Convergence (with  Marta Dziewanska, 2015), Dance (2013), Planes of Composition (with Jenn Joy, 2009), The Senses in Performance (with Sally Banes, 2007), and Of the Presence of the Body (2004). He collaborates regularly with artist Eleonora Fabião in her actions.

The event is part of the laboratory format Intervention Space Art and Academia. It is a cooperation with the Graduiertenkolleg 2638 Normativity – Critique – Change.
