C07 Architectural Interventions: Visions of the Future from the 1960s to the 1990s
In light of the current social, political, economic and ecological crises, the artistic examination of visions of the future continues to increase in significance. This subproject asks how visions of the future in architecture and literature intervene in existing discourses, narratives and practices.
While the first project phase focused on the technical and media dimensions of architectural interventions from the 1960s to the 1990s, the interest in the second funding period is placed on those imaginations of the future that emerged in the same decades as a reaction to economic, ecological and social grievances. We understand them as attempts not only to develop alternative space concepts and narratives, but also to specifically develop new options for action and forms of society.
Sub-subproject 1 is dedicated to literary models of alternative forms of space, architecture and society beyond those of colonialism, patriarchy and capitalism, as they are conceptualized in texts by Ursula K. Le Guin, Octavia Butler or Françoise d’Eaubonne. Sub-subproject 2 reconstructs, proceeding from developments in London, topics and networks of “alternative” ecological and experimental construction and asks what these approaches can mean for contemporary debates. Sub-subproject 3 contextualizes these works in their reception both at the time and in the present and elaborates upon their potential as a means of intervention in current discources and architectural practices.
