Artist Talk | Aria Dean

May 19, 2025 | 12:00 PM - 01:30 PM

Event in English spoken language | free admission | no registration required | no barrier-free access

Aria Dean, currently in Berlin as a Mercator Fellow at the CRC Intervening Arts, is a New York based artist, critic and curator.

Dean’s work – spanning sculpture, video, installation, and writing – navigates the intersections of race, technology, and subjectivity, with a strong focus on how Blackness is produced, represented, and mediated in both physical and digital space. Her writing has appeared in publications such as Artforum, e-flux, The New Inquiry, and Texte zur Kunst.
In this talk, Aria Dean will discuss her artistic work, in particular her current research for a theater production that will take place in New York in the fall. With this production, Dean continues her work with virtual tools such as Unreal Engine and her conceptual exploration of 3D digital objects, models of history and structures of meaning. In the theater project, Dean explores monuments, ruins and romantic nationalism through a fictional exchange between two intellectuals in 1923 Berlin.
